NAIDOC Week

It’s been an amazing week of celebrating NAIDOC Week at West – a time where we celebrate the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our children have taken part in many cultural activities during the week, and we thank the following people for running these educational events:

·           Corey Payne and Elisha Mangal  - Rock Paintings

·           Christina & Kristy Brims & Jane Barnes – damper making

·           Billie Brims – traditional dance

·           Colleen Johnson – story telling

·           Willie Hannah – aboriginal artefacts

·           Clontarf Academy – sporting games

·           MDAS – BBQ lunch

We will hold a Special Assembly on Friday morning in the gym. All parents/carers are welcome and encouraged to attend.

As part of our celebrations, we will have a FREE BBQ lunch on Friday.  Students will need to bring their snack for recess, as usual, and the canteen will have the usual snacks and drinks for sale, but there will be NO LUNCH ORDERS on Friday.

DISTRICT MINI OLYMPICS

The District Mini Olympics were held on Tuesday 29th August.  A team of 36 students competed against all of the schools in the District and did Mildura West PS very proud, both on and off the track.
Many students finished in the top 2 of their events and will now be invited to compete in Bendigo in the Regional Athletics Carnival.  More information will be sent home soon!

STUDENT ACTION TEAMS

It has been wonderful to see students use their initiative and create activities for each other at  Lunch times. Here is a picture  of the ‘Language Club’ where  students have been teaching  others about their own languages  such as Maori, Tongan and  Chinese.

ABORIGINAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

This week Corey Payne and Elisha Mangal have been working in the school painting our Totem poles for our Indigenous garden. We can’t wait to see the finished product. They will also be working with all the students in Art next week. The students will be painting stones that will be laid at the base of the totem poles.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

Next week Mildura West PS will be celebrating NAIDOC week. We have many visitors coming to the school to work with the children, educating them through dance, cooking, art, storytelling and games. The purpose of the NAIDOC week is to help our students understand the culture and history of Australia’s first people. The assembly next week will feature a performance by the students, a didgeridoo performance and the opening of our Indigenous garden area.
