Parents/Carers are all busy – most of us lead hectic lives butthese 3 women have found the time in their lives to serve the Mildura West School Community for a very long period of time.  An effective and pro-active school council is a key factor in having a successful school. And I know these members have contributed enormously. They have brought valuable life skills and knowledge to the role, and these have helped to develop the broad direction and vision for the school, maintain and build on the school’s facilities, making our school a fantastic place for all of our children to learn and grow. We thank them for their time and dedication to our school. We have many new members, we will pop some photos of them in our newsletter next term.

IB Corner

This week, the focus for the IB corner is the Learner Profile Attribute, Caring. The attributes of the Learner Profile describe the qualities that an internationally-minded person displays and are developed through and by every aspect of the IB Primary Years Programme. We show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. We have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

On a personal level, the students might ask themselves:

I can be caring if…

  • I treat others with respect and kindness
  • I help others.
  • I want to make others happy.
  • I am sensitive to other people’s needs.
  • I consider other people’s feelings.
  • I care for the environment by… (ask how they think they could do this).

Bigger picture, the students are learning to understand that…

  • They value the importance of self-care and empathy for others.
  • They make choices that have a positive impact on others in their community.
  • They show empathy for the needs of others, even if they have never met them or shared their experience.
  • They might make meaningful choices and inspire others to take action.

Teacher observing each other to improve their craft.

This week, our teachers have learnt a great deal from observing each other teach. We do this regularly because it is an excellent way for teachers to learn from each other and improve the way they teach. All of our teachers watch various lessons very closely, taking detailed notes. They also interview the students in the lesson and collect work samples. After the lesson, the team engages in a robust conversation about the teaching and learning. Each teacher who observed then provides specific feedback to the teacher. It is a very rigorous process and we love it because we learn so much!
