5L cleaned up Rio Vista Park on Thursday 28th

We, 5L, cleaned up Rio Vista Park. The Mildura Rural City Council worked with us to clean up Rio Vista Park. When we got there we met Sam, the MRCC Biodiversity Officer and Terry, the Litter Control Officer. They were talking about what we need to do. They gave us some tongs to use so we could get the rubbish out of the bushes. All of my friends and I got a photo. We found some unusual stuff like a pizza box and an Adelaide Zoo map. We all talked about what we had  learnt. What I learnt was that a small little olive can grow into a BIG tree. When we were leaving we said thank you and then we left on the bus to go back to school.

Rio Vista Clean-Up Australia

P1070589We collected lots of different things. Some for recycling and some would have to go straight to the Landfill. Do people dump household rubbish deliberately? Why do they do that?P1070603P1070584

Rio Vista looks much better!

Last Thursday on a warm summer day, the wonderful 5L travelled by bus to Rio Vista Park for a MASSIVE clean up! In my opinion 5L did a wonderful job cleaning up all sorts of things that were not meant to be there! The unusual things we found that were very strange to find in a park included a toothbrush, shaver, gas bottle, even a picnic rug and other very odd things!

What happened at Rio Vista Park Thursday 28th Feb ?

We were picking up rubbish at Rio Vista Park on Thursday  28th Feb. It was a lot of fun with my friends. I found a zoo map from Adelaide and some of the other kids in my class found a lot of clothing. We think someone would have put it all there. Some of the boys found a glass bottle. The Park looks better now that we cleaned it up. It was a lot of fun!

Helping the environment at Rio Vista Park

The whole grade from 5L travelled to the Rio Vista Park to help clean up all rubbish that has been dumped there. Doing this will make our environment a cleaner and better place to be. Billie, Jade, Hannah, Shelby, Tuscany and I found some unusual waste hiding in bushes and underneath bark. We had to use gloves to protect our hands from all the dangerous things and tongs to pick up the rubbish. We all had a great day!

Going to Rio Vista Park

I enjoyed going to Rio Vista Park on Thursday. There was a lot of interesting items that were waiting to be picked up. Hannah found a pizza box. Chloe and I found a paper bag that said ‘Adelaide Zoo’ on it. I believe we made quite a diffrence to the Park and I hope to go again someday soon.

Rio Vista Park

Picking up rubbish at Rio Vista. My group found lots of items like a shaver, a toothbrush, a rug and lots of other things. Jack and I  found a close to new  gas bottle, so we took it in the bus and Mr Young will get it checked out to see if we can use it for our BBQ.

5L did a fantastic job of cleaning up Rio Vista Park, we made a big difference. I am proud to be a member of 5L!

Put your rubbish in the right bin!

There is only one place for rubbish! What is so hard about that for people to remember!

There is only one place for rubbish! What is so hard about that for people to remember!

As I watch the river pass by,
I look out of the corner of my eye,
I can see someone trying to put their rubbish in the river,
I look with despair,
and I walk over there,
I pick the rubbish up and as I look up,
The person has disappeared!
I walked over to the bin and put the rubbish in…
It wasn’t that hard to put it in?

Too wet to go to Johnson’s Bend

We were to clean up Johnson’s Bend today. We had many bags some for recycling and some for rubbish all ready to go.

Now it is a week later. We have cleaned up an area of the river. We found so much rubbish. Some things could be recycled. There was a lots of glass. People do not think about the animals or other people that might get cut from the glass. They do not think either that glass can start a fire.

We made a difference and cleaned up heaps of rubbish! Go 5S!

Too wet to go and then we went the next week!

When we went to Johnson’s Bend we collected a lot of rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day. We representated our school and helped to make the area tidier. Because we worked in small teams we could look under lots of bushes and collect all the rubbish.

Clean Up Day

Today is Mildura s Clean Up Day at our school. We had to cancel because Johnson’s Bend was flooded! We will now organise another place to go.
This is a week later. We went to another part of the river not far from Johnson’s Bend and we cleaned up heaps of rubbish. It was good to help out!

Delay of excursion-too wet! Then we went to represent our school!

On the 8th March 2012, our class went to Johnson’s Bend as the Litter Control Student Action Team. Our purpose was to pick up rubbish at Johnson’s Bend. There was a lot of rubbish and it made a really big impact on the environment there. Our bags got quite heavy, with the amount of rubbish!
The great amount of rubbish there destroyed the image of Johnson’s Bend. Furthermore it is an enormous threat to animals if they accidently come across garbage and they swallow it. I found a rolled up newspaper and lots and lots of glass beer bottles, some already shattered into glass shards. It made Johnson’s Bend look like a garbage dump!

Representing Mildura West for Community Clean up Day!

Clean up at Chaffey and Johnson's Bend by 5S

Our visit to Chaffey and Johnson’s Bend was to help Clean-up an area in our local community. My team had to make some difficult decisions about some of the things we discovered. We found an old newspaper and were not sure if we should put it in the recycling bag or the rubbish bag. After we discussed where it might go we decided to put it in the recycling bag. It was a good idea to think about what we were doing as we saved a lot of things from going to the landfill.

There were many unusual places that people had hidden their litter. I thought hiding a tin can with the lid under one bush and the can itself under another bush was ridiculous. Who would go to that trouble to hide a can? Just take it home and put it in the recycling!

Thank you 5S on behalf of the Clean Up Australia Day Team. Your efforts made a difference and stopped all of that litter from ending up in the Murray river!
