Greenhouse Games 2010

GREENHOUSE GAMES > This year from October 11th to December 12th our school is competing in the  2010 Greenhouse Games Challenge. Every family has received a brochure explaining the Challenge. All you have to do is go to  www.greenhousegames.vic.gov.au [Greenhouse Games website] and register your family as part of the Mildura West Team. Then plan your mission against climate change. Start small and then do some bigger things. This is to be  completed weekly. Keep track of your points and post them on the website. There are prizes for the school if our school is the most energy efficient we will win $2000.00 and a Greenhouse Games trophy. It’s fun. It saves energy  and saves money for families on their energy and water bills. The winning  households will win a Bunnings voucher worth $200.00.  Good luck!

When I am 25…

When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because there will be big poles with a box shape at the end connected to the front of everyone’s house for solar energy. We won’t need power lines any more because people will all have to own their own solar system to store power.

We will not have a rubbish problem because everyone will have to think of ways to recycle all of their rubbish in some way.

Our waterways will be clean because we won’t be using any fuels that we have at the moment to power our boats. We will all be using recycled water and I hope to see the water a clear blue so we can see the bottom of the river.

(no title)

When I’m 25 my community will be sustainable because we will no longer have a drought. There will be lots of rain and we would be smart and catch it in tanks so that we had lots of water for our gardens and for use in our homes. When we have used it, it could be treated and flow back into the river. Robots will water peoples’ lawns and pour them glasses of water when they want one. That way the robot can be programmed to use just the right amount of water and not waste any. We will just have water restrictions all the time but we will all be used to it, we won’t even realise there are restrictions.

When I am 25…

When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because all of our cars will run on air, we will new solar panels that use a lot less sun to make them work and are a lot more effective. These solar cells are made by cutting up the solar cells really finely and are called sliver cells. If these sliver cells are mass produced then they will be a lot cheaper. The way technology is going we should be able to mass produce the designs people have come up with to run cars and motor bikes using air.

When I am 25

When I am 25 I think that Mildura and other places will be sustainable because there will be NO fuel and cars will run on rubbish. No one will take water out of the Murray River because everyone will have water tanks to save rain water and use saved water to water  lawns. The Government will create a new species of fish that will help kill Carp. There will  be nets on every gutter to stop rubbish from going down the drain. There will also be a special chemical in the gutters that will clean water with germs in the water that goes down the drain. Hopefully the Murray River will then be nice and clean so that you could see the bottom of the river clearly. Then hopefully the Murray River would then be clean!!! By Mikaela 2007

When I am 25

When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because everyone will have to have more than one big tank at their house, even flats will have to have tanks. These tanks will be for recycled water because a lot of people have tanks for rainwater already. Then only the recycled water will be allowed to be used for gardens and toilets. By then everyone might even be able to safely drink recycled water.

When I am 25

When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because it will be using grey water for our toilets leading to our garden. We will also have waterless toilets available and only have plants native to our birds and animals.  Our river will be healthy and clear of blue green algae and other river problems. All the water in the town will be stored in reserve tanks for drinking and keeping clean. Sprinklers will be fitted with water saving devices to reduce water usage but at the same time keep the grass green.

All heated water will be either by solar panels on roofs or wind farms to supply power for lights and other electrical appliances. Liam Year 6

Hoverboard

Explanation of my design…

The Hoverboard will run on a solar battery that will be charging all the time and the solar battery will generate the Hoverboard for at least 4 hours without sun fully charged. The way the solar battery gets charged is by the solar panel on top of the board as you can see above. This solar panel is not connected to the Hoverboard instead it’s connected to the solar battery. The solar battery will be connected to two propellers by wires. The propellers will rotate for turning, so you don’t lose the force of air pushing down when you’re turning. The rotating propellers will reduce the percentage of Hoverboard uses falling off. This will help the board hover. The frame and body of the Hoverboard will be made out of a light materials called carbornfibre. Carbonfibre is a material that is lighter than metal, but is still as strong as metal. The maximum speed a Hoverboard ‘everyday board’ can go is 40km, a ‘trick board’ 60km and ‘race board’ 100km. There are 2 slots for beginners to hold on to.

When I’m 25 the world will be sustainable because…

When I am twenty five my community will be sustainable because there would be a law that you’re not allowed to cut down trees and build buildings.

FISHING: Fishing would not be allowed and by the time I’m twenty five there would be only a few fish left. That means we would have to cut out our fish in our diet.

RUBBISH:We would have a big rubbish hole where we put all our rubbish and there would be a big lid to put over it. There would be one hundred robots that go around the streets and pick up all the rubbish!

CARS:We would have battery built cars that don’t run on petrol and don’t blow out smoke. They also would be cheap.

I hope my community is sustainable when I am twenty five so my kids and their kids and their kids will grow up in a healthy community!

When I’m 25 the world will be sustainable because…

When I am 25 the world will be sustainable because boats will run on recycled water instead of fuel so they do not pollute the water, cars will run on giant batteries not petrol, our world will be sustainable and perfect! We will stop all things that pollute from going down the drains, we will pick any rubbish up and put it in the bin not in the river. We will have digital paper so we do not have to chop down precious trees. If we chop down trees we will not have as much oxygen, so eventually how will we breathe?

Do the world a favour, by not littering, if you see rubbish pick it up!

We will get rid of all spray cans because that is one thing that makes the hole in the ozone layer bigger. If the ozone layer gets a big hole the heat of the sun will get hotter and hotter causing skin cancer.

Saving water in the house especially in the shower is a good thing to do. Take a bucket in the shower with you when you wash your hair. When you turn the hot tap on it’s cold to start with put the bucket under the shower and catch that water while you’re waiting for the water to warm up.

In the bath: Empty it with a bucket and pour the water on the lawn and roses, don’t pull the plug out.

Washing your car: Wash it on the lawn, not on the drive way the washing detergent ends up in the river and kills all the fish.

Save the environment: Don’t cut down trees, pick up rubbish,  walk to the shops, school, the park, and the beach and save water whenever you can..

The Ozone Layer: This is the part of the Earth’s atmosphere that contains relatively high concentrations of ozone. It is mainly located in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 15 km to 35 km above the Earth’s surface, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically.

The ozone layer has a big hole in it, which is our fault! We pollute the air, you know we have large industries in Australia and around the world and guess what comes out of them… pollution!

You’ve heard the saying, ‘ONLY RAIN DOWN THIS DRAIN!’ That is exactly what I’m trying to say to keep the air we breathe clean ‘KEEP THE AIR IN THE ATMOSPHERE CLEAN!’

When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because…..

Schools Win 2000 Litre Spiral Tank from Bluescope Water
Students Win Book voucher from Readings & CERES goodies
All entrants receive a certificate of participation.
Primary school students are encouraged to write around 100 words.

Due Date May 7th

When I am 25 my community will be sustainable because…  100 words for some great prizes.

Sustainability means that we can maintain something without any effect on the environment

Think about the following areas.Water, Waste, Energy or Biodiversity

An example from MWPS:  When I am 25 I think my community will have a system of tanks so that we can collect all the water we need. We will all have to have tanks to flush our toilets; some of us might even have waterless toilets. We will have our own supply of drinking water in tanks; some underground and some above. We will only be able to plant natives in our gardens to provide habitat for the many birds and animals we have in Australia. People will be thinkers, wondering what else they can do to help the environment. We will have a caring community for the environment.
