My friend Mitch U, my brother, Mum and I went down to the sandbar. A sandbar is a lot of sand next to a river. So at the sandbar we play volleyball on the sandbar. After that we had a swim and went and got fish and chips. We have battered fish over here what type of way do you cook your fish?
Apex Park has a sandbar and that is right next to the Murray River.
It is nice over here and the river is a fun place to be.
When it’s hot enough my family goes water skiing we have lots of tubes. We have a biscuit a hot dog and a pancake. They are all very fun and I like water skiing a lot. Does it snow where you live? I have two dogs and their names are Max and Millie. Other things I do I like ride my Ripstick. In Australia we have 3 sorts of mammals: monotremes such as echidnas, marsupials that are all animals with pouches and placentals such as a dingo. In Australia we call candy lollies.
I camped on the Murray River on a long weekend for fishing and also just for fun as well. The fish I normally catch are European Carp, they are an introduced species and a pest in the Murray River. We are not allowed to throw European Carp back into the River. My Dad has caught a Golden Perch. We always put in a shrimp net for bait. I caught a few geckoes and put them in a container. I let them go after 5 minutes. The river is a great place to go skiing. We always camp two metres away from a sandbar. At night we like to have marshmallows on the fire and they are nice when they are crispy and crunchy. When we finish we pack up and go on a bumpy road through Kings Billabong.
Once in the school holidays I went camping with my friend Aimee and her dad Brett. We went fishing, and I didn’t catch anything the first time. I was on the phone with my Mum (mobile phone) when my fishing rod started bobbing up and down. Brett told me to come quickly because I had a fish on my line. It turned out it was a carp.
A European carp is a pest in our waters, an introduced fish. If carp numbers grew, soon we wouldn’t have any other fish in our river. Anyway we threw it on the bank and got something to eat. [We are not allowed to throw carp back in to the river.]
The next morning Brett went out fishing at around dawn maybe seven o’clock. Aimee and I stayed back. Later in the day we went fishing again. We saw a goanna (huge Australian lizard). I also went swimming that night for a little while.
We left for home the next morning; I’d had so much fun.
Easter 2007 my family and I went down to Goolwa South Australia which is where the Murray River meets the Southern Ocean [map shown below].
The 8 states and territories are … Northern Territory , Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria which is south east, New South Wales which is in south east and east , Queensland [above New South Wales], Tasmania which is an island off the south coast of the mainland and the Australian Capital Territory [ACT] .
Anyway back to the main subject we went to the Murray mouth and there were people spear fishing and boating and it was a very happy and safe looking environment if you don’t know what spear fishing is it is where extremely skilled trained spear fishermen see the ripples or something and hit the fish with a spear.
To be continued…
At Wentworth in NSW the Murray River joins the Darling River and this is called the junction of both of these rivers. It is not very far from Mildura. In 1830 the famous explorer Captain Charles Sturt discovered the junction while he was following the Murray to South Australia. There is a picnic area for people to enjoy the view.
When I was in year two my friends and I went on the PS Melbourne with our school. We went through Lock Eleven. We were in the lock with another boat. We guesed how long it took for the other gate to open. We had a lot of fun.
Glossary: Lock means an enclosure in a river. Where we live it is called Lock 11 on the Murray River which enables small sboats such as houseboats and speedboats to pass between sections of the Murray at different levels.
My family sometimes go camping at the Murray River and we go fishing in the boat. Sometimes we have BBQ’s and get sunburnt really easily. I have been on a donut before and it is really fun. We also have camp fires and we toast marshmallows. The river is great fun to swim in but we always wear life jackets for safety. It is great fun at the River.
- A barbecue also known as a Barbie [BBQ] is something that you cook things on.
- A donut is something that you ride on behind a boat and it is shaped like a circle with a piece of material on the bottum of it. When we toast marshmallows we put it on a stick and put it over the fire.
- Sunburn is when the sun burns you and you go red and sometimes your skin peels.
On one of my river experiences I went knee-boarding. On my first go I went on the pancake.
On my second go I went on the kneeboards (I was pretty good if I do say so).
On my third go I went on the wake board. I could not stand at all. It was a fun and a tiring experience.
Glossary: Pancake: A big inflatable rubber thing
Wakeboarding : is a water sport and it means riding a wakeboard over the surface of the water behind a boat. It is a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing. The rider is towed behind a boat.
I would like to talk about the Murray River and what I did there. One day my family and I went to the River for a swim on a really hot day. When we got there we jumped straight into the river. Once we got in the river it was wonderful. Sometimes we have a barbecue [BBQ].
I love to go down to the river. My family always ride on our bikes down there. It’s a tiring 4km ride from our house, to the river and back. I go with my Mum, brother and little sister. She always rides on the seat at the back of Mum’s bike.
We only sometimes hop off our bikes and run down to the sandy part of the river. We always want to go swimming but Mum says no because the river does have a lot of dangers. The only time I’ve been swimming was with my friend at Apex Park.
On one of my oldest cousin’s 18th birthday, my whole family went skiing. I went on the doughnut with my Dad. But that’s when I was about 6 so now I’d like to go kneeboarding.
I’ve always had a fun time in or on the banks of the Murray River.
Kneeboarding: Special board that you use when you go skiiing. You sit on your knees. Used on water
Doughnut: A Doughnut shaped strong inflatable, that you sit in a hole and ride. Used on water
My family and I go to the Murray River heaps. Sometimes we go fishing and catch heaps of fish sometimes not as much. Sometimes we have BBQ with meat: lamb and yummy salad.
Other times we go knee boarding or on the donut which is fun along the river and we have to slip, slop and slap.
A Donut- the donut we are talking about is something you ride on behind a boat that drives you around
Slip, slop and slap. Slip on a T shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat to keep the sun off your skin.
An experience I have had in the Murray River is when ……..
My cousins and I were in the doughnut and it tipped. We screamed but it was very, very good fun at the same time !
I am also interested in what you do in the Rio Grande that’s like my experience ?
