THREATS AND THREATENED!
The definition for ‘threaten’ is a species that is endangered or in threat of becoming endangered. There are many threats, some are predators, some are human faults such as pollution.
PREDATORS!
There are many ‘predators’ in the Murray River, some good some bad. Predators are animals that can eat other creatures (to a certain size) not all predators are just carnivorous.
FINGERLINGS!
‘Fingerlings’ are young fish that are raised in captivity and once old enough are released into the river.They are native fish that are released to increase their numbers.
ELECTROFISHING!
‘Electrofishing’ is a way of seeing how many of which species are in a certain area. They electrocute fish within 50m.The fish float to the surface and can be examined, they will awake within a certain amount of time unharmed.
FISHWAY’S AND FISH LADDERS!
A ‘fishway’ or fish ladder can be fitted at locks to help fish get through. Fish can use these when migrating and research has proven some introduced species get trapped.
