This is my section for the Mildura Litter Forum…
Education: How we educate others about litter using Kids teaching kids and Kids teaching adults.
Every year we need to teach the new students including the Preps what goes in each bin. The Year 6’s have Prep buddies for the whole year and it is our job to introduce the preps to the school and explain all the different things we do. In Science Mrs. Vorwerk and Ms Hudswell spend the first 3 science sessions at the start of the year with all classes revising recycling.
They teach the Preps about recycling using real waste to demonstrate what goes in each bin. Amanda from Mildura Waste Management comes and runs a Recycling Relay with the Preps so they learn how they can recycle at home too.
Teaching kids and adults how to recycle takes time and we have to keep showing and explaining what has to happen. The year 5 and 6 classes prepare posters to help everyone understand the waste systems.
During Term 2, the Sustainability Ambassadors, a group of Year 6 students that are committed to helping the environment, will be timetabled at Recess to help the Preps, 1’s and 2’s to put their waste in the right bin.
Contamination is a problem
One of the issues that is very hard to get right is contamination of the recycling bins. It only takes one person to put soft plastic into the recycling bin and it is contaminated. At the start of this year , Grade 5 and 6 looked at the issue ‘Contamination Costs’ and came up with lots of ideas about what this means. These are some of our ideas:
- The landfill is filled up faster because the recycling if it is contaminated has to go there.
- If a recycling bin is contaminated it cannot be recycled.
- More people have to be employed to check contamination.
We also came up with some slogans.
- Contamination is a catastrophe!
- We need to recycle properly so let everyone know especially adults!
- Never refuse to reuse!
- Recycle today for our future!
We take action in the Community
This year 5S is the Litter Control Student Action Team and they check the school ground and also participate in the Community, cleaning up litter. For Clean up Australia Community Day 5S represented our school and cleaned up Chaffey Bend.
New idea for our school…
At SRC we are looking at every class having a certain section of the school ground and a garden to look after so we are all proud of our school and keep it litter free.
